Who will finally stand up to this lunatic? I realize that Judge Merchan has to walk a fine line in order to get a good result within a minimal timeframe. And I know that nailing him requires a very complex strategy. I just wish someone could poke a pin in that giant orange gas balloon and watch it go flying and squealing around the room until it falls into a shriveled soggy heap of rubber on the floor.

His brain is geschwöinckted. He doesn't perceive how INSANE it seems? —to say he's not willing to accept an outcome that doesn't favor HIM? He doesn't recognize that? — HE DOESN'T GET THAT? (how crazy it is) And . . . he doesn't get the beyond-obvious, implicit monumental arrogance and megalomania in that? It suggests he really is ill.

Trump is far worse than just ill!

Yes, he’s also evil.

The January 6th insurrection should've automatically & immediately disqualified him legally & morally from any future political office. That he wasn't shows what a morally corrupt & dysfunctional nation we've become. And Merrick Garland has only made the situation worse with his inaction.

Mitch McConnell could have gotten him convicted for the 2nd impeachment. He is to blame and McCarthy going to Florida kissing his ring resurrected him.

Mr. Obeidallah, I want to personally thank you for all of your expert journalism and how you present the raw, unadulterated facts about Trump and his nefarious, dangerous intentions. Not many news journalists are saying this as plainly as you are, for that, I wish to thank you. You put to shame mainstream media. It is they who should be all over this perpetually instead of being asleep at the wheel.

Yes, and we are just letting it happen. Nothing is stopping him. The SCOTUS is in his back pocket, the republican politicians are his sock puppets & he knows he can easily still manipulate his supporters even though many are rotting in prison for blindly following his instructions on Jan 6. They still support him. So we are inviting this upon us. If we willingly stand on the track in front of an oncoming freight train, what do you think will happen?

Ahh, but those rioters will have quite the surprise learning they'll have to serve out their full term after Biden WINS in Nov!

trump/maga and other affiliated or extremist groups have a 2025 project prepared for deconstruction of our government, alliances (specially NATO), taking permanent control of the white house and perhaps establishing a quasi-fascist christian theocracy in the country. Worse, we could see the rollback of civil and voting rights, as they trample all over the contitution.

Expand full comment

The rollback has been happening for quite a while. SCOTUS gutted the voting rights act, and then overturned Roe v. Wade - which took away the right of half our population to have agency over their own bodies, and to get necessary healthcare. I am sure it would only get worse, even though I can't imagine how.

Expand full comment

I have seen Christians who said that basically project 2025 could be the prelude to the arrival of Antichrist and subsequent Great Tribulation (in layman terms, global dictatorship)

Expand full comment

Jose, I’m with you except I’d put “scare quotes” around the word “christian,” since so much of what these so-called christian nationalists want is often the opposite of what Jesus taught.

Expand full comment

Isn’t it something that he had 2 weeks as POTUS between his insurrection and Biden’s swearing in but he did NOT pardon the rioters he inspired? He purposefully let things so that the only way they could be saved would be to go get him another term (by any means necessary of course). In the meantime, he’s using them as props while they rot in jail, struggle to find work and live in families that have been decimated by their choices.

Expand full comment

The one thing that gives me pause is the fact that he has almost no supporters showing up at the courthouse where he is being tried, despite his calling on them to rally to his cause. Could it be that his MAGA army is losing its taste for putting itself in legal jeopardy? People are gun-shy now that they’ve seen some of the sentences that have been handed out. Just a thought.

Let's allow the Army to do its job this time, and turn the 'protest' into Pickett's Charge 2.0

Yes - Trump announced that he would invoke the Insurrection Act. Be prepared to deal with his minions. Our military is in his crosshairs. Anyone who doesn’t comply likely would be treated as the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Milley is now a target of Trump.

Expand full comment

Trump is going to call his violent heavily armed MAGA morons into the streets win or lose. If he wins it will be to start immediately on the revenge and retribution tour, if he loses it will be to attempt a coup. The question - will law enforcement and government rise to the occasion and stamp this shit out or not? Sadly, I think too many cops are MAGAs, they join in the fun.

Alternative - if he loses MAGA morons are at least bright enough to know that they will end up in prison while he continues to walk free. So they don't hear the call.

Expand full comment

I doubt that the alternative will come to fruition. His base is aggrieved and they want a civil war.

Expand full comment

Let those MAGAts try it. There are a lot more of us than there are or them. We will crush them like ants if they try starting a civil war. President Biden has the military available, and he can use it to stop any such right-wing jackassery.

Expand full comment

I'm with you. I am also convinced that more than many of them are just cos-players. If the cops or the National Guard show up they'll run because they don't want to end up like their fellow travelers - sitting in prison while Trump and the other leaders roam free.

Expand full comment

It’s been pointed out that not only are many in law enforcement of the maga persuasion, there are also a lot of them in the military. I worry about that a lot & wonder if the top brass & FBI are trying to root them out.

I totally agree with your take on the situation. Just imagining it causes my heart to skip a beat. I can only hope that sanity surges through the land between now and November. I doubt it will infect the conservative members of SCOTUS, but with sane people in office, perhaps some of the damage can begin to be rolled back. If we're fortunate, we will find a way to make SCOTUS a fair and impartial moderator for the good of the American people.

Expand full comment

If we can somehow get Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and if Biden can win, I'm hoping that we can start impeachment proceedings against those crooked, corrupt "justices" on the Supreme Court. Also, Biden should immediately expand the Court to 13 and put some real justices on the bench so we can save the country from the right-wing ideologues that are currently working to destroy our democracy.

Fearing tRump empowers him. When one doesn't have confidence in his/her own power to overcome the fear mongering put out by a wannabe dictator, one gives their power over to that imposter. It is up to all of us to understand and realize that tRump has no power over us,

he is a has-been, a loser, and soon to be a convicted criminal. Yes, he has power over his followers, who have given him their power. So they are also losers, because they have made themselves into monkeys, automatons. They haven't been obeying tRump's orders or desires lately, because they have seen what happened to his followers after Jan 6th, and they see tRump sitting powerless in court under the control of a judge.

So giving him our power at this point is totally counterproductive and self defeating. Instead, let's utilize our power to choose leaders who have proven they have our wellbeing in mind and heart. Let's donate to, work for and vote for proven leaders - Democrats!

I call him tRump because he is the biggest asso since T-Rex. You can tell he is a direct descendent of T-Rex by their tiny hands and huge mouths.

Fear not, use your power to banish the has-been loser!

I think the blame is pretty widespread. The way I recall it, Garland was held as something of a hero, in sympathy for his getting screwed out of his SCOTUS seat by McConnell — who, I think, shoulders most of the blame. He had at least four chances to stop Trump (Scalia’s seat, RBG’s seat, and two impeachments) — just by showing a little integrity — and he weaseled on all four.

But the sympathy for Garland led many of us to clamor for him to be made AG. I think Biden responded to that. I don’t know if Joe considers it a mistake, but I do.

What happens now is not that relevant, IMO. One way or another, he will not be AG after this year. 🤔😉😊

You can’t have been saying that since January 6th. Garland was not AG on 1/6/2021.

I'm British from London UK, I cannot abide any injustice of any kind, but this with trump is outrageous and OTT, I am shocked the Supreme Court did nothing to get him out with section 3 of the 14th amendment and even more shocked if that's possible that they give him the right to have total immunity; they haven't said as much but it tells us everything we need to know by their recalcitrance to stop him and it's horrifying. I am not an American citizen but the world is looking and watching with astonishment that this could happen in America where your constitution and democracy has been torn to shreds. I'm appalled.

We aren’t giving up, Heather. The Combover King is a bizarre combination of PT Barnum and Archie Bunker and he’s done deals with the worst of the worst - from the Federalist Society to megachurch grifters to Putin to McConnell. He has taught many up and coming con men what to try to do but he has also shown us what needs to change in our system to strengthen it against Donnie Jr and every other copycat to come. Voter apathy and disinformation are MASSIVE problems the world over so, we need to put this rebellion down and show our allies how to do it, too. The next 6 months are going to be a real roller coaster!

I've realised it's in my DNA to fight injustice, I am what i am!! My father used to call me a free spirit, he was right, I can never give up. My dental fraud case has run parallel to trump from 2016 and I'm fighting it myself as I cannot afford legal representation, the lies from both sides, meaning trump and my defendants are truly mindblowing. yes, never give up is my mantra!!! Both trump and one of my defendants have said they've done nothing wrong! Oh and the LIES!! I've fought all the organisations and they have all let me down, deliberately i might add, and all this does is make me all the more determined to get Justice. When you have evidence that cannot be disputed you win in the end! Yes, you're right, the next 6 months will be a real roller coaster for both of us. The Justice system is bad in both out countries. I'd like to think both cases will end with imprisonment for ALL, I'm really hoping Justice will win through, for both of us, the difference being that mine is a civil case.. until I show evidence of fraud and Lies, and I'm chomping at the bit to expose them.

Trump is just repeating his 2016 and 2020. He is repeating his previous statements, just tweaked a bit. He is amping them up as they weren’t as successful the first time.

For example, in 2016 at a rally he was being heckled. He told the crowd to punch the guy in the mouth and said he would pay for a lawyer. Remember?

At the January 6 rally on the Ellipse he said, “you have to fight like hell. If you don’t we won’t have a country anymore.”

Remember?

While he is a habitual liar, you have to believe everything he says in regard to the election and what he will do after.

Looking back on all that's happened since January 6th, it becomes increasingly obvious that Merrick Garland has totally abdicated his responsibility to protect the nation against criminals. He waited and waited and waited to appoint Jack Smith--and now it's almost certainly too late. If Trump should slither his way back in the White House, the U.S. is toast. History will not be kind to Merrick Garland. That is, unless the MAGAts take over and destroy the country, and then it won't matter because history is written by the victors. Merrick Garland has helped the MAGAts immensely due to his lack of initiative and, apparently, a lack of courage to do what is necessary.

Expand full comment

I am super frustrated too but I’m not sure this is about courage or initiative on Garland’s part. I think he’s taken to heart the old maxim “if you come at the king, you best not miss”. That’s especially true in our legal system where defendants enjoy protection from double jeopardy. The Senate should have impeached the bastard!
