You’re right, we have to keep fighting. I’m so terrified right now, especially as a woman, even though I’m in a blue state, I’m concerned that won’t make a difference. Thank you for your piece. I’m just blown away that hate won, I hope we get through this intact and whole as a country. The electoral college needs to be abolished just like slavery. I’m so scared we’re looking at the beginning of Hitler’s fourth reich, I still can’t believe this happened. How do we move forward?
First we rest and regroup. Practice some self care. When you are ready, there will be a group of people who believe in and value democracy who will find a job for you in the resistance. I lived through WW II, and there were groups in France and England, and other countries who fought against fascism and, ultimately, won. We must be those people now, our country, and especially our children, need us.
Thank you for your kind and supportive words. I’m grateful you’re still here. And you’re right, we need to resist. Thank you so much. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🥰🥰🥰🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is not helpful. The game was rigged and no matter who the Dems put up, IMO, they would have lost.
‘ Some debate what Democrats did wrong. Others debate why would so many Americans support Trump.’ Kamala ran a great campaign and we as nation are lucky to have her as the great American she is.
Now is not the time for words, words, words where Kamala is being skewered by Dems. Now is the time to come together and fight tyranny and corruption. Now is the time to give up on little conveniences in life the benefit fascists. For example:
Do not use PayPal.
Do not watch the pusillanimous main stream media.
No longer use Amazon.
Do not eat at corporate owned fast feeders.
Do not show tolerance to those that would literally hope their god kills us.
Stop arguing amongst ourselves.
Do not send children to religious schools*
There are so many things we can do with the right leadership that help organize us.
* Pol Pot murdered 3,000,000 million of his own people to make Cambodia into his vision where intellectuals were the enemy in his mind where he had spent many years prior as a Buddhist monk, where women are not allowed to be monks. Russia, under Stalin as Poland was recaptured during WWII, rounded up all the intellectuals, took them to a forest and machine gunned them to death.
RESIST, RESIST, RESIST and let’s stop fighting amongst ourselves.
Hate lost. I see so much hate from the blue. Examine yourselves. Examine what the majority want and why. Then find a way to come together. Hatred and rhetoric and namecalling pushes people away. You ARE influencing others. Negatively. Think about it instead of attacking me for speaking rationally.
It’s pretty hard to swallow past the lump in my throat. I’m having g trouble taking a deep breath… but this 71 yr old woman veteran is NOT giving up or giving in. This democracy may be in deep decline and God only knows how deep it will fall, but we cannot stop protesting. We cannot just give up. As long as my heart keeps beating I will hold on to the belief that we will not become the Fourth Reich.
I wouldn’t have agreed with Zappa in 1989 that “we have opted instead for an authoritarian system disguised as a democracy”, but it seems we have handed our democracy to autocrats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLiagIdA84c
Trump’s vote total was about the same as his .total vote count in 2020. Kamala’s vote count was millions less than Biden’s total vote count . Dems stayed home!!!
And one of the reasons can be found in Di-Ag.org. Many lifelong Dems were feeling politically homeless. Including me-but I voted for Democracy, not autocracy. We have a LOT of work to do.
That absolutely had a LOT to do with those 11 million missing Dem & Indie voters. I’m an old white woman in the SW, a progressive or liberal Democrat. I have zero connection to anyone of the Muslim faith, nor of Arab or Palestinian identity, but I am sickened & angry that my govt refuses to enforce our laws about weapon usage, & using starvation as a weapon when it comes to Israel. We denounce those war crimes if any other country in the world does them, but not Israel?? wth?
I was excited & supportive of Harris, & I donated, wrote postcards, & voted for her; but I just cringed every time she again & again pledged unequivocal support for Israel no matter what new atrocity would come to light.
I can’t imagine the hate I would feel if it was my family who were on the receiving end of those atrocities.
The Arab American, Palestinian, Muslim community represents 100s of thousands of votes in the states we needed to win. Harris wouldn’t have had to do much to give them the hope that she would take a different stance than Biden.
Then there was her letting her wealthy finance involved BIL convince her to soften her verbiage about increasing the tax rates on the wealthy. People noticed.
The Democratic Party had better get their act together & fast & go back to being the champion of the WORKING POOR & lower end of the middle class or we may not win a general election in a long, long time.
They must stop being in denial about the fact that the U.S. is not growing economically, it is not the major economic power it once was; the BRICS alliance is the emerging economic power. We must recognize that fact & make plans as to what we’re going to do about that.
Go listen to the presentation on YT by Richard Wolff economics professor regarding the decline of the US empire. The stagnation of real wages for the past 30 yrs, the enormous widening of the wealth gap. If Democrats refuse to do something about those things, they are just pushing us closer & closer to greater civil unrest & more violence than we’ve seen in our lifetimes.
‘ The Democratic Party had better get their act together & fast & go back to being the champion of the WORKING POOR & lower end of the middle class or we may not win a general election in a long, long time.’
Do not know if in my long lifetime the Dems ever had their act to together. I would not measure ‘act together’ by winning an election or finally getting through one or more legislative bills only to have them sabotaged by Repugnants later on as the Dems dropped the ball going around patting themselves on the back while the repugnant rats were growing in the sewers of the minds of the electorate, spreading disease and death.
Now it seems the rats are in full control. We do not have enough cats—read cat ladies—to stem this infestation.
A democracy is only as good as the people who make it strong. One responsibility of the people is to be as informed as possible about the political milieu. Protesting against one party whilst ushering in one that is likely to deport millions of people with skin a darker shade of lily white - starting with Muslims - is not a smart move.
50% of GDP has shifted out of the pockets of bottom 90% into the top 1% elites in the last thirty years. Obama had an eight-year mandate to do what Biden/Harris have done, which is to invest heavily in the working poor, middle class and young people. It was just too little too late. In that I agree with your analysis. If Obama had taken the Biden/Harris route, Trump may never had found a foothold.
Should be interesting. When Trump repeals the Chips Act, thousands of Midwest manufacturing jobs will go away and mostly affect Trump states. You reap what you sow
Protest is a young person’s gig. Though we accomplished little during the Sixties - never ended the war, nor brought peace worldwide, nor achieved women’s equality - it sure felt good. And yes, the National Guard did fire upon us (“Four dead in O-hio”). Today we need new warriors.
Just because I am old doesn’t mean I will give up. I have grandchildren and great grandchildren who need to live in a free country, and on a planet that still exists. I will fight fascism with my last breath!
Me, too. I am almost 83. My mind works just fine, so I will do what I can to keep democracy stronger than ever. It needs rebuilding. To my dying breath.
Too much heartbreak to watch America to recede back into the Fifties (both eighteen and nineteen) … not so easy to tilt at (cancer-producing) windmills.
I couldn’t run fast in the Sixties - head meet nightstick, San Francisco State - can’t run at all these days. The ramparts will have to be manned by others.
there were old people who protested with us in the 1960s. I remember one old woman who sat up all night at a protest rally. Bless her soul! We can still protest. We must teach young people.
Both Biden and Harris conceded before the votes were all counted or a recount and investigation of the myriad irregularities of election interference an voter intimidation coming in from all over the country.
You must find ways to get news. There are many sources. Even MSM isn’t all bad.
They voted for hatred, division, dirty air and water, un-equal rights, continuation of horrific school massacres and killings all over the country, lies, fraud and sexual abuse. They voted for the end of Democracy. We fought the British and their King for our Independence and sovereignty and wrested control of the keys to our Great Country from a tyrant. We now have willingly given the keys back to a tyrant. Dark days and much suffering will soon be upon us. Everyone will share this misery. No one but the super wealthy will go unscathed.
People fought the British for independence from the king, but not for freedom for women and slaves. I'm glad my ancestors fought in the Revolution, but we have to do better than they and the founding fathers did. Freedom from mysogyny! Freedom from racism! Freedom from authoritarians!
100% agree. There has always been a sickness in this country by not not confessing and then making amends that this country was founded on greed and exploitation. We practiced genocide on the Native Americans and built wealth through slavery. We have NEVER fully welcomed women as equals.
What I see is a lack of education concerning history and the decisions that we think are being made to benefit some can be short- sighted when knee jerk reactions are made without looking at the bigger picture. And I admit that the immigration problem needed to be addressed, and it was being addressed until Trump intervened and stopped the intervention due to his own selfish agenda.
Many, many Americans are not politically aware. Many voted because prices are high in the shops. Some voted because global conflict was not in our face each day, but Trump's face was. as was the fear he generated around migration which the Dems did diddly squat on until their hand was forced. Some voted because they think an unpredictable, erratic strongman capable of doing anything (like nuking North Korea or Iran) kept the belligerence in those countries in check. Some voted because he is male and white and a traditional patriarch that is familiar and somehow comforting to them. Some are just bigots, racists, misogynists and haters generally. It's a mixed bag and Dems need to look at that mixed bag closely when they regroup.
I agree with you and what message does this election give to my service connected disabled husband about his sacrifices to keep our democracy alive so that a fascist dictator would never take hold in our country? I don’t want any MAGA trumper to ever again thank him for his service.
Yes, indeed there were factors that need to be addressed . What they refuse to admit is that they enjoy sharing , mimicking and enjoying so much of the same disgusting stuff that a mentally unstable man possesses and they have no problem allowing their children to watch it all happen ,while they profess to have Christian family values.
‘ What I can say with great certainty is that if we all check out and allow Trump and his right-wing allies do what they want with no push back—be it protests to pressing our Democratic elected officials to speak out loudly—this democratic experiment will end. ’
We have a problem. We, the people, do not have a lot of power. We need the democratic leadership and the few republicans with ethics and a true love of country to have cajonies and stand up. We need generals, the DOJ, the FBI and all those with power who want to preserve the Union to stand up and fight.
Yeah, it’s over for at least a decade or so until an actual revolution happens. Starting in a few months, every bit of “news” you hear or see or read in the US will be approved by Trump.
You are correct. Trump will follow Orbans blueprint and seize control of the media. It will be sneaky, and we may not even be aware that it is happening, Sure, we'll have elections, but they will be just for show. Do Putin or Orban ever lose an election? So getting Democracy back at the ballot box is a fools errand. If we truly want our Democracy back, we will have to take up arms and fight for it. We fought and died for our independence before, and won it. Are we willing to do that again? As Benjamine Franklin said when asked what kind of country do we have, he replied, you have a Democratic Republic, IF you can keep it. UNITE AND FIGHT!
Finally went back to MSNBC today and I'm getting strong vibes that the liberals are throwing in the towel. Liberals, as some have objected to me saying, are wimps.
There's always here. And with scholars like Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce White Vance, citizen journalism like The Conversation and ProPublica, democracy advocates like The Brennan Institute and Brookings. Chin up, there's always a way for thinkers to speak to us.
Yes, there is that possibility. They can’t afford to alienate all of us though. There is always the option of leaving. I’m doubtful they will want a brain drain to happen which is precisely what will happen if they come down too hard on us all.
Very low, Democrats are too polite, too afraid to get really tough & push the crappy Senate/House rules right up to the edge. They’ve allowed the scummy Republicans to get away with doing it for decades & just rolling over & shrugging 🤷♀️ like “What can we do? It’s the rules or it’s tradition.”
The Senate Dems need to have the guts to tell Schumer his services are no longer needed as minority leader, he doesn’t have the personality nor the communication skills for what needs to be done now.
What a great ending to this newsletter. I personally am feeling defeated, and a headline that said Kamala Harris was merely rearranging chairs on the deck of the Titanic didn't help. I was thinking about the people I've been looking to who have helped me to stay strong, and realized that I need to be strong for them now. I can't let them carry the whole burden. I don't know what I can do in that regard, but I do know that "poor me, poor me" won't help anyone, myself included. What shocks me is the amount of misogyny and racism that is apparently rampant in our country. The idea that those traits are stronger in our country than competence is very sad. I'm also sad to report that Texas has again elected Ted Cruz for senator. I do not and will not ever understand voting for destruction, but that's what my state and our country have done.
After reading some numbers, I have come to the realization that it wasn’t the number of our fellow citizens voting for him, it was the number who stayed home. Apathy, it seems, is deadly.
From the first I saw it this morning, I have been in shock and disbelief. I am so disappointed in those who voted red, but they were mostly his followers anyway. The people I am most angry at are those who could have saved us, but sat on their couches and recliners, eating junk food and watching reruns.
Those of us who value democracy and care about people who aren’t exactly like us, still must work to defeat fascism, this time at home on our own soil. I’m 84, and disabled, but I have a working brain, and can help with encouragement and ideas. There is a job for everyone who understands that this doesn’t have to be the end of the great experiment, just a bump in the road.
Make phone calls to all Senators right now that you can get thru to, not just your state’s & tell them they must not allow Trump to neuter them by allowing him to skip the cabinet confirmations.
Thank you, Dean, for quoting Churchill. I was born in July of 1945 just outside London, and my Dad was an RAF pilot. Now I’m a 79-year-old Connecticut resident who is not happy with the election results. I also spent a lot of time on abortion rights issues to help usher in Roe. I was devastated when that was overturned. And do people realize what overturning “Chevron deference” also means? I’m posting everywhere that the RESISTANCE STARTS NOW.
Remember everything Trump accused others of, he was doing. In this case the election was rigged. How many times did he say that? And he counts on the democrats to not attack this election that was rigged. Read what Thom Hartmann wrote today.
You’re right, we have to keep fighting. I’m so terrified right now, especially as a woman, even though I’m in a blue state, I’m concerned that won’t make a difference. Thank you for your piece. Inspiring words. I agree, history is on our side.
I I agree with you 100 percent, Ashley. So where do we do from here if we are to oppose the Trump Administratino’s attacks on democracy?
Go to WeAreWorthFightingFor.org I was ona mass call on Thursday in which Jamie Raskin participated.
Ah, Jamie Raskin, the person Democrats should've chosen for President.

It’s ok, take the time you need. We’ll still be here when you have gathered your resources and are ready to rejoin us.

Or they did vote but their ballots for Kamala were automatically discarded by some algorithm placed in the voting tabulation system
This seems to have credence. We need our leadership to not hand over the keys until fully investigated.
They won’t, they couldn’t even investigate an insurrection & stealing of national secrets, treason. The Democratic Party has no guts
P. J., you will get no argument from me on that opinion
Zappa and George Carlin tried to warn us…
United we resist! ✊
Should be interesting. When Trump repeals the Chips Act, thousands of Midwest manufacturing jobs will go away and mostly affect Trump states. You reap what you sow
Agreed!
That quote from Churchill's speech made me tear up.
Protest is a young person’s gig. Though we accomplished little during the Sixties - never ended the war, nor brought peace worldwide, nor achieved women’s equality - it sure felt good. And yes, the National Guard did fire upon us (“Four dead in O-hio”). Today we need new warriors.

I have to believe that those who voted for him didn’t fully comprehend the damage that they were doing to not just our country, but to the world.
He has NEVER succeeded without cheating.....I OBJECT!
So Biden received 82 M votes in 2020 and Kamala will top out at 72 M… fraud alert.
What is the likelihood of that?
PS, Hitler first got into power by being elected. Then he and fellow Nazis followed a plan that is the blueprint for Project 2025.
Yeah, it’s over for at least a decade or so until an actual revolution happens. Starting in a few months, every bit of “news” you hear or see or read in the US will be approved by Trump.

Yep. Great advise. That's where I get my news. And mother Jones, the Atlantic, New Republic and Meidas touch news.
Why? What power will ProPublica actually have?

You are so right! Look at the numbers - Kamala lost the independents who voted for Biden in 2020, not the democrat voters.
Yes it’s time for the new generations to take on their responsibility to keeping freedom alive
