Shock from losing your home to fire, flooding, tornadoes and earthquakes and no insurance will dumb down anyone, add to breakup of families, divorce, joblessness, one parent families, homelessness, ruined health, frustration, anger, depression and helpless grief. I went into mourning for my country in 1989. The Greens were right about the effect climate change would have on society, but no one in the government had the courage to do anything about it.
The only way to make the oil & gas industry transition to renewable (my understanding is they already have plans to do so, they’re just fine with continuing to make money on oil & gas as long as they can) is to penalize them for not transitioning. That can be done a number of different ways: 1. Pass legislation giving them a date by which they must generate energy 50% oil & gas & 50% renewable. Make them pay a monetary penalty for failing to meet that requirement. 2. People who have had their homes destroyed more than twice by extreme weather events could be put in a special category for the purpose of insuring their homes, then pass legislation requiring the oil & gas industry to pay to insure those homes. I’m sure there are more ways they could be penalized. Anything that
makes them accountable for the destruction and lives lost to extreme weather events will do.
I suspect that the planet will have become largely or completely uninhabitable before we run out of fossil fuel. (It's not just "drill, baby, drill"; there's also "frack, baby, frack" which will give us earthquakes and groundwater that's polluted by mystery poisons because the fracking liquid is "proprietary and, therefore, secret".

And the Climate Change deniers are still out in full force.
As Sarah Palin says (and her followers here on Substack echo) "Drill, Baby, Drill!"
And what will they do when the fossil run out?
Oh, yeah, we'll colonize that planet in "Avatar" and use "unobtanium."
