Wise advice. And a good outline of things to stress with Kamala Harris. The MAGA faithful are dug in. But there's hope that others, who are undecided, will come to their senses and see what a disaster Trump would be for the country. A dystopian future with Trump is not what I have in mind as I cruise past 87.

I'm a few years younger than you, but I completely agree about the future. What I'm thinking is that hope and positive ideas would grab people if they heard them.

It really shouldn't be close at all, there is no choice for reasonable people. An articulate, intelligent, conscientious, energetic, successful person with a vision for moving America forward in excellent ways vs. a convicted felon who instigated a lethal insurrection against the country/Constitution he took an oath to protect as well as defying the espionage act with the theft of top secret documents and who has nothing to offer America except cozying up to dictators, advancement of white supremacy, division and tax cuts for the very wealthy.

Can't wait to celebrate Harris/Walz victory wearing this funny "Kamala removes stubborn orange stains" hoodie on November 5th 🤣 👇

Hopefully start to heal as a nation as Trump and his cult further fades into oblivion. 🙏

Your article confirms what I was thinking about the other day as the media keeps itself busy swatting the constant stream of lies and vitriol from the Trump campaign. I have created a positive talking points list in my iPhone using your excellent summary near the end of your article. Thank you for this excellent report and the sound advice on the best way to keep the Harris Walz joy front and center!

As they are saying, Kamala Harris is “the only adult in the room”. When a child throws a temper tantrum, you don’t fan the flames by engaging with it. Trump IS that child… just ignore him

But it's beyond that ,those of us with intelligence know this but the cult is nueve and unintelligent.

Thank you. This is really instructive as we prepare to make the most of the next 45 days.

I will have to listen to the ads later, but your point is well taken. It makes way more sense to appeal to what people need and want than it does to be negative. Negative is the republicans' turf. Hope is Harris' turf. IMO hope is what wins, positivity wins.

It should be Hope, Joy, Freedom. Thanks Susan!!!

Thank you, Hans! You are absolutely correct.

Yes and yes and yes. It didn’t take studies to convince anyone that trump runs on attention. Even JD said Keep the cat-eating fiction going!

This is true, and I think the Harris-Walz campaign is doing so, but the media will focus on Trump like big tits--a spectacle, though, is not a story.

Wouldn't it be wise to pick three topics to run the campaign on? Reproductive freedom, grwing the Middle class ( touting the infrastructure bill, chips act, inflation reduction act (and emphasizing that Trump promised yesterday to rebuild NYs infrastructure when elected? Who can forget infrastructure week as a running gag?)).

Trumps chaos will district the viters while they should be focused on my three topicstarter, or some other ones...

Or maybe it is "just" Hope, Joy, Freedom

Yah, Hans — the only “infrastructure” project trump did while he was president was a partial wall at the Mexican border — that he said Mexico would pay for and it did not. Compare that promise to the Biden -Harris promise on infrastructure.

Thanks for caring about what’s going on here, Hans and for participating in the discussion!

I saw a French headline while in the airport after the debate. Le Monde’s front page had a big picture of Harris and Trump and rough translation: “the democrat repeatedly destabilized the republican who spouted a chain of lies”

Great comments, Dean! The “Kamala Harris fighting for everyday Americans like you” ad is so excellent. I’ve been canvassing door-to-door and finding some people to be persuadable, and a lot more people than usual willing to talk.

As a canvasser, i find it’s good to come prepared with examples of past positive social change impacts. There are too many people who think nothing matters, all politicians are the same, etc. So come prepared. It helps.

And people — Dean’s readers: please do help canvass if you can! I find it a bit unnerving but also rewarding and impactful. I kind of love it.

It's as Timothy Snyder writes in the opening pages of his new book, On Freedom, we must focus on seeking freedom FOR policies that will move us forward, not freedom FROM old policies. Freedom FOR our people is about focusing on what we can accomplish with the Harris/Walz policies rather than discussing freedom FROM the former president's concepts of plans.

Fascinating! Supporting Harris brings more suasion than attacking Trump. Trump has spent a decade “growing” his clown show so successfully that denunciation is the inevitable knee jerk response! Seems the non-MAGA are programmed too.

And having given birth used to be a pre-existing condition as well, if I remember correctly!

Expand full comment

I don't remember that per se, but I worked in group health insurance for 15 or more years. What I would tell you is that if you recently gave birth, got new insurance, and had medical complications when newly insured, yes that would be a problem.

Expand full comment

In any case, we should all be happy for women willing to give birth, and support them in any way we can.

Allowing insurers to hold it against them is immoral, but still care neither for mothers once they've given birth nor nor for their children, not for their health, not for their well-being.

Expand full comment

Yes. One of the things that has bugged me for years is that the so-called "pro-lifers" don't care one whit about a baby after it's born - no need for head start, nutrition in school, post-birth medical complications for mother or baby… I'm amazed that apparently republican women don't have the same problems -they never miscarry, never have a systemic illness that makes pregnancy dangerous (like Lupus) - actually they have probably got the money do do whatever they want, to buy medical care despite the laws against it. Sorry for the rant, but this is a subject that has really gotten to me over the years. BTW, group health insurance rarely had maternity benefits back when I worked in the field, but if you had a complication, it was considered a "regular" illness, and was therefore treated.
