Nikki Haley finally said out loud on Saturday what many of us have been screaming about: Donald Trump’s cognitive decline cannot be ignored. Of course it took Haley until just a few days before the New Hampshire primary to do this but the hope is that corporate media will now begin to fully cover this issue.
What raised red flags for Haley were Trump’s comments Friday night at New Hampshire campaign rally where he repeatedly confused Haley with former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Trump told the audience, “By the way, they never report the crowd on January 6. You know, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley…did you know they destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it?” The 77-year-old Trump then repeated the glaring error stating, “All of it, because of lots of things, like Nikki Haley is in charge of security, we offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, national guards, whatever they want. They turned it down.”
Of course the reality is that Republican Haley—--a former governor of South Carolina who had served in the Trump administration as ambassador to the United Nations from 2017-2018--did not hold any office on Jan 6 and had zero to do with security for the Capitol that day. Yet Trump invoked Haley’s name four times in that speech.
That is why on Saturday, Haley raised questions about Trump’s mental fitness to New Hampshire voters. First, Haley explained, “Last night, Trump is at a rally and he’s going on and on mentioning me several times as to why I didn’t take security during the Capitol riots. Why I didn’t handle January 6 better.” She then added, “I wasn’t even in DC on January 6. I wasn’t in office then.”
Haley continued about Trump, “They’re saying he got confused…That he was talking about Nancy Pelosi.” It was then when Haley rightly raised a red flag about Trump’s mental abilities, telling voters, “The concern I have is – I’m not saying anything derogatory, but when you’re dealing with the pressures of a presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do it.”
To be clear, Trump invoking Haley’s name instead of Pelosi was not a case of Trump lying because he believes it bolstered his political fortunes—as he often does--such as with his repeated lies about 2020 election fraud. We know this because in response to media reports about Trump confusing Haley and Pelosi, senior Trump campaign adviser, Chris LaCivita, posted on X Saturday, “Nancy ….Nikki….its a distinction without a difference.”
In reality, the differences between Haley and Pelosi are tremendous, most notably the fact Haley is a Republican who once served in the Trump administration and Pelosi is a Democrat who served as Speaker of the House. Beyond that, Trump’s claim Pelosi oversaw Jan 6 security is a lie that has been fact checked countless times. This raises another valid question about Trump’s mental state: Is he knowingly lying or does he sincerely believe facts that are detached from reality?
Haley is 100 percent correct to raise red flags on this vitally important. It’s true that Haley also raised questions about President Biden’s potential cognitive issues but to be blunt those issues—as well as Biden’s age—have been covered extensively by the media, thus, allowing voters to make up their own decision.
In fact, that is backed up data. As the media watchdog organization Media Matters noted in October, the nation’s top newspapers mentioned Biden’s age more than twice as often as Trump’s—who will be 78 in June. And when it comes to Trump’s repeated mental errors and moments of confusion, again as Media Matters has documented, it was barely mentioned by corporate media.
Trump’s decline is so apparent that in December, conservative Megyn Kelly even raised alarm bells, stating on Glenn Beck’s radio show about Trump, "There's no question that Trump has lost a step or multiple steps." Kelly then cited Trump’s series of errors where he said he defeated Barack Obama or that he’s currently running against Obama. She remarked, Trump “is confusing Joe Biden for Obama. I know he's now saying he intentionally did that — go back and look at the clips, it wasn't intentional." The former Fox News anchor added Trump is making mistakes "repeatedly," including "confusing countries, confusing cities where he is."
Kelly is correct with her list of Trump’s mental errors. For example, in October, Trump confused what country his longtime ally Viktor Orban—the head of Hungary—is the ruler of, wrongly telling voters Orban was the leader of Turkey. That same month Trump greeted a crowd of supporters with the words, “Hello, to a place where we’ve done very well, Sioux Falls! Thank you very much.” In reality, Trump was in Sioux City, Iowa — not in Sioux Falls, a city in South Dakota—prompting a local elected official to whisper in his ear where he actually was at the time. And the list goes on—including Trump claiming in September that he defeated George W. Bush in the 2016 GOP primary when in actuality he ran against Jeb Bush.
This is not the first time one of Trump’s opponents for the GOP presidential nomination raised this issue. In November, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s campaign posted on social media a thread of more than two dozen confusing remarks Trump had made, claiming this was the reason “why his handlers won’t let him debate.”
But given Trump won last week’s Iowa GOP caucus and is well positioned to wrap up the GOP presidential nomination over the next few months, it’s imperative that the media robustly address this issue so that GOP voters are fully informed about the mental fitness of the person they may nominate to be President.
This is especially true for conservative media outlets since that is where Republican voters are gathering information. However, as we know, right wing media outlets have chosen loyalty to Trump over loyalty to the truth because in their view, that is what their audience wants to hear. In other words, these conservative media outlets view holding Trump accountable—from his attempted coup to his 91 crimes to his cognitive decline—as being bad for business.
This means once the GOP nominates Trump, we need to pressure corporate media to cover the fact he’s mentally unfit. The stakes demand it.
Tfg’s mental decline has been more visible by the day. It must be covered by MSM far more than President Biden’s age. He is dangerous in more ways than one. He should be in an assisted living facility.
As someone who helped care for my mom, she lived a structured and quiet life. But the last year was tough cognitively. Clearly, Trump has no one around him who actually LOVES him, because he's kinda a threat to his own well-being. Also, there are all these stories of him smelling, because he's incontinent. That's a typical sign of dementia and/or major back hell. The incontinence may also be due to a supposed history of abuse of speed, addarall and cocaine. Perhaps. But I do find it interesting that his family doc was the infamous Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastro doc, not a GP or internist. Anyway, I hope the GOP poo-bahs stage an intervention. At this point, Trump may be more demented than he his fascist.
