I get the sense today that many fellow Democrats want me to downplay Trump's win in Iowa and say it's no big deal. I can't in good faith do that since Trump is too great of a threat. My articles are not intended to scare people but to inform people. If you prefer a sugarcoated approach to politics you can easily find that in corporate media. If you want the hard, blunt truth-even if it makes some uncomfortable--then Im the person for you. This is not personal in any way, We can still be friends but I will not allow comments on my Substack that downplay the threat Trump and MAGA poses to our Republic. Thanks and lets win in 2024!!

I wish we could let the repugs woukd succeed from the United States w/no money from us. They can have Iowa Texas Florida Kentucky and any other red state. Those are the ones that come to mind at this moment. I am not sure which is coming first, WW111 or Civil War. Please don't start sugar coating Dean,.

You're absolutely right. He was no joke in 2016, 2020, and is no joke now. I don't know why people laugh at him, when he's THAT scary.

I'm 100% for you, Dean! It's just too bad I'm not an American - I can't vote :(

Trump won a low turnout series of caucuses in a lily white state with an electorate that is 100% fearful, white, racist evangelicals. It confirms what we know about the state of what was once the Republican Party, now the MAGA cult. What I find most troubling is that the corporate media is treating this win as a mandate for Trump's eventual return to power. Their naivete, their craven both siderism, their cowardice is going to play directly into the hands of those that seek to destroy our democracy.

Time to use the label #RepubloFascism for every action, policy, and budgetary priority, that today’s GOP advocates for.

As a former American Government teacher I am constantly shocked by Trump’s supporters. How can Americans support a candidate who clearly wants to destroy our government? A candidate who doesn’t believe in the rule of law. A candidate that doesn’t respect the Constitution. Trump doesn’t deserve the loyalty of any American. He doesn’t care about them and is only trying to enrich himself.

As a history teacher I witnessed district administrators telling students that history wasn’t an important subject. Geography isn’t being taught because that subject isn’t a valuable skill. The Republican Party is using immigration to stir the base. It doesn’t seem to matter that the base are the descendants of immigrants or that their own ancestors were once ridiculed. People that have been told history isn’t important aren’t going to understand how they are being manipulated. The Republican Party is able to control groups of people who have legitimate grievances but the real causes of those problems are not immigration and critical race theory.

Trying to put a little positive on the results. He got 50% of 109,000 votes in a state with just over 3 million people. So it’s somewhat of a small percentage of the overall population.

Percentage of Republicans and Democrats in the state is pretty even. 19% is unaffiliated.

What I have difficulty understanding is how 2 states with the whitest and smallest populations are considered somehow bellwethers for the country.

That’s why Dems didn’t even deal with Iowa for the first time this year and I’m thrilled. Iowa is only a bellwether for white Christofascists. I’m glad the Dems are using their funds more productively. Who cares what Iowa says?!

Slamming an entire state of the union... wow.

This is a state that voted for Bill Clinton (both times)..... then voted for Barak Obama (both times)

and voted for John Kerry with 49.3% vs 49.7% for Bush.

Reading is important if you care for facts.

Not me. Same applies to NH.

What does a racist comment like “...whitest and smallest populations...” have to do with anything?

Iowa voted for Barak Obama both times, Obama is a man who happens to be Black and was the President of the citizens in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Smallest population????

Iowa is ranked 32nd

New Hampshire is ranked 42nd

True. Just like the concern about announcing East coast results before the west coast finishes voting.

Every demographic, eh? Iowa is not indicative of the nation. It has skewed ‘white flight refuge’ for some time. Also, heavy phony religious & spiteful tv preacher land.

yes Trump won very demographic in the state of Iowa. https://www.axios.com/2024/01/16/trump-iowa-caucuses-takeaways Why deny reality? Not sure what my fellow Dems are up to today but people downplaying Trump's win do so at the risk of our freedom and democracy. This will be a tough election - we will 100% win in 2024 but it will take more work than ever before.

Trump is the frontrunner of circling the drain. Yes, the Fix News/Bannon rhetoric is dangerous because it empowers the moronic uneducated in voters. I am not a Dem, not a mahgah. I vote, not for fascism but progress.

Tffg has a motivated cult. The other two have nothing. People are acting like this was a surprise. Polls (which I hate and don’t trust have predicted this). Why are people now shocked?

"This is where we are in 2024 America."

What a time to be an American. How old were YOU when you realized you're playing a part in one of the country's most historic eras? What role are YOU playing in presenting to children some of America's most teachable moments? We may not like our current state of affairs, but there's no question we are living in historic times.

Funny how a democratic process (the Iowa caucus) is a sign of Fascism. A closer sign of Fascism is when a political party doesn't hold primaries and TELLS the constitutes who to vote for...

Obviously it's the results of the election that Im pointing to. Do you truly not grasp that or are you intentionally gaslighting people?

Dean, you should re-read your headline... it is focusing on the Iowa caucus. Results of the Iowa caucus is a democratic process, nobody can morph that into “fascism not even you. The Democrats are fighting NOT TO HAVE PRIMARIES IN STATES THAT WILL HAVE A CHALLENGER to Biden.

Hello Cowboy, it doesn’t get any more fascist as that!!!

That’s next after trump steals his way back into the White House.

... and exactly how does Trump “steals himself back into the White House”?

By manipulating the red states under the voter right suppression laws to keep people from voting. By claiming, as people are already saying, that the election is rigged and causing a second insurrection. The difference being that his acolytes have taken over what was the Republican Party. There won’t be as many governors and SoS’s to reject his commands.

70% of 14% of a political party with one foot in the grave is the MAGA cult which is drinking the koolaide and so they are the few motivated to show up in a storm. It’s complicated and the propaganda has been effective and we are on the edge and can too easily slip over the edge of the abyss. Seriously, though, who would want to show up for the other two. The experts in authoritarianism recommend minimizing tffg not enlarging him. It was a freaking caucus and the only ones to show up were the ones who would take a bullet for the Hitler wannabe.

Madeleine Albright was correct in her explanation of fascism, and your post hopefully will make these MAGAS think, I don't know how to describe them, they're not stupid, the evidence is everywhere, but there's none so blind as those who refuse to see.

I just don't understand why the US has let trump be on the ballot when the evidence is plain to see, everywhere on the internet and they know what to expect if trump wins, I can't get my head around it, seems those who could stop him don't see it as imperative he is not on the ballot especially as he's in the lead *shakes head.*
