Trump was “Honored” to “Kill” Roe v Wade--and He'd be “Honored” to Impose a National Abortion Ban
Trump is a women killer.
There is one person responsible for millions of women losing a 50-year constitutional right to control their own body: Donald J. Trump. In fact, Trump has continually bragged since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022 that he did that. Here’s just a sample of those comments:
1. In May 2023, while appearing on a CNN Town Hall, Trump boasted: “I was able to terminate Roe v. Wade after 50 years of trying,” adding he was “honored” to do so.
2. Newsmax interview in May 2023, Trump bragged: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do.” He added, “I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”
3. Trump on Fox News in Jan 2024 bragged: "For 54 years, they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it," adding, "And I'm proud to have done it."
4. In a 2023 social media post, Trump even patted himself on the back as the reason for the state abortion bans: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone…Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever.”
And in case anyone forgot that Trump is the reason women were stripped of a constitutional right, he reminded us again Monday when he released his informercial on abortion by bragging, “I was proudly the person responsible” for ending “Roe v. Wade.”
I’ve never seen a person so excited to be the reason that millions and millions of women have been stripped of the fundamental right to make decisions about their own healthcare and lives. Yet there is Trump bragging in his video on Monday that he “proudly” did this.
And on Tuesday, we saw more of what Trump is “proud” of as the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that since Roe was overturned, the state would now enforce an 1864 law (Yes, 1864!) that bans all abortions except to save a woman’s life. The Court found that Arizona’s 15 week abortion ban enacted in 2022 was no longer valid because it was premised on Roe v. Wade being the law of the land. However, once Roe was overturned—courtesy of Trump—the 1864 law from 160 years ago would became the controlling law on abortion. This law forces a woman who is raped to carry the rapist’s fetus to term against her will. It also carries with it a 2- to 5-year mandatory prison sentence for doctors who perform abortions for any reason other than saving a patient’s life. As a practical matter, when the ban goes into effect in 14 days, more than three million women in Arizona will have lost a right to control their own destiny—-again something Trump was “honored” to make happen.
Let’s be clear, Trump supports this ban in Arizona—as he does with all the total bans. He told us that in his video on Monday when he endorsed the state bans on abortion saying, “My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint,” adding that “the states will determine” what the law is and that is the way it should be. That means Trump supports the now 15 states—with Arizona included—where Republicans have barred abortion at day one of conception. In these states with total abortion bans, on day one of pregnancy a women’s uterus effectively becomes property of the state. And no one is more “proud” of this than Trump!
Trump knows that these abortion bans are causing women to suffer horrible health consequences—often having to bleed almost to death before they can qualify for an “emergency” abortion in red states. For example, in Tennessee, Mayron Hollis discovered she was pregnant in spring 2022, however, her doctor informed her that the pregnancy could be fatal to both her and her fetus. Given this news, Hollis scheduled an abortion. However, after Tennessee’s abortion ban took effect on Aug. 25, 2022, Hollis learned her abortion had been canceled. She was, thus, forced by GOP law to carry the fetus to term against her will. Then, 25 weeks into her forced pregnancy, Hollis began bleeding uncontrollably, lapsing in and out of consciousness. Her daughter Elayna was born 14 weeks premature and still struggles with an array of health problems. Hollis required a hysterectomy.
And studies now document that the GOP abortion bans are killing women—literally. A recent report from the Gender Equity Policy found that “women in states with abortion bans are nearly three times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth or soon after giving birth.” As the President of Planned Parenthood, Alexis McGill Johnson, recently explained on my SiriusXM show, women are “suffering harms including death from the abortion bans.”
These GOP abortion bans are—in a word—BARBARIC. (They are also religious fascism.) Now you understand why the United Nations Human Rights Council wrote in 2023 report that the state abortion bans in the United States not only “puts millions of women and girls at serious risk,” but they are “violations of International Human Rights Law.” The UN human rights expert added, “Women and girls in disadvantaged situations are disproportionately affected by these bans.”
All of this is why the Biden campaign swiftly released a new digital ad shortly after Trump’s announcement on Monday spotlighting a Texas woman who suffered a miscarriage and nearly died after doctors in the state refused to perform an abortion. The emotional ad concludes with the words, “Trump did this.”
The apparent reason Trump published his video Monday was because he was hoping to convince (gullible) voters that he would not support a national abortion ban. Of course, everyone—especially his base—knows that if Trump won in 2024 plus the GOP gains control of Congress and passes a national abortion ban modeled after Texas that prohibits abortion from day one of conception including in case of rape and imposes up to life in prison for any doctor who performs an abortion, Trump would “proudly” sign it. There is zero doubt about that.
Trump only cares about his base. And if they want such an abortion ban, he will 100 percent sign it—just like he overturned Roe v. Wade to make his base happy. In fact, President Biden on Monday stated about Trump and the prospect of a proposed abortion ban, “If they put one on his desk, he said he’d sign it.”
However, Trump—who is out on bail--also gets that his overturning of Roe v. Wade has been very bad for Republicans in election after election. We have seen this in red, purple and blue states. This is not surprising given nearly 70 percent of Americans in a 2023 Gallup poll support access to abortion. In contrast, the percentage of Americans wanting make abortion illegal in all circumstances has fallen from 21% in 2019 to just 13% in 2023.
Add to that, Trump’s claim he “terminated” Roe v. Wade is really going to play badly with women given an NBC poll that found nearly 80% of female voters ages 18-49 disapprove of Roe being overturned. As DNC chair Jamie Harrison explained to me Friday on my SiriusXM show, they are going to be running ads non-stop in swing states featuring Trump’s past comments, such as bragging that he was the “one that got rid of Roe v. Wade” and was “honored” to do so.
Trump released his video on Monday thinking that the women of America are as easily conned as the MAGA faithful. They are not. Trump is going to lose in November and it will be the women of America leading the charge. And after Trump loses, these same women can then boast: “We were the ones who got rid of Donald Trump” and we were “honored” to do so.
Trump did this! NEW: The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state is enforceable, a bombshell decision that adds the state to the growing lists of places where abortion care is effectively banned. This is more of what Trump is "proud" of doing!! https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/arizona-supreme-court-ruling-abortion-ban-rcna146915
The ads write themselves.
AMERICAN WOMEN: “We will be the ones who get rid of Donald Trump” and we will be “honored” to have done so.
