The appeal of Trumpism is to create a legal culture and structure that allows this kind of behavior to go unpunished. That is what is meant by "Make America Great Again" and it was also pushed when Reagan was campaigning. The GOP has become an engine of hate regarding multiracial democracy and multiracial human rights. It hasn't been the party of Lincoln for decades.

What kind of a sick fuck tries to drown a 3 year old? That woman should never see the outside of a jail cell for the rest of her life but in texas I’m sure they’ll give her a medal

As a Texan, I hate that the state keeps re-electing Abbott. He's a sorry excuse for a human being. Fortunately, not all Texans are that way - there are a few strongholds of sanity in the state, and I feel grateful to live in one.

I’m a TX neighbor, I know a lot of good Texans. They don’t include Abbott, Cruz, Cornyn, that felon Paxton, to name a few. Mississippi isn’t much better but it’s better than Louisiana right now.

MAGA is blind hatred and vitriol. No intelligence, virtue, compassion, empathy, or decency.

Hillary captured it best, in one word. Deplorable.

I wouldn't be sorry. I agree with you. Oxygen thief.

A WOMAN who can do that to a child, I just can’t get my mind around that concept.

Definitely MAGA. They are beyond reason, decency, compassion, and intelligence. Simply hate, exemplified.

Why should anyone have to work this hard to have hate taken seriously? The woman began by telling the mother that she didn't belong here. She tried to grab both children and succeeded in holding the three year old's head under water. She yanked off the woman's hijab and began "beating" her with it, which I imagine was like being snapped by a twisted wet towel in a locker room. She screamed that she was going to kill them all. The irony of a Black man jumping in to save them doesn't escape me - I imagine there were probably plenty of White people watching. And yet she's only been charged with being drunk, with a very low bail. Only after people and CAIR began protesting did the local TEXAN city government begin reacting. I guess the family's just lucky that the drunk woman didn't have a gun.

Expand full comment

The irony of a Black man helping them reminds me of the biblical parable of the good samaritan. The fact that there were probably plenty of white people watching makes it clear that the only person who saw this family as human was the Black man. Kudos to him for that.

Expand full comment

The parable of the Good Samaritan - how many of the people watching this, including Ms. Wolf, go to church every Sunday and claim to be good Christians?

We've wandered into stereotypes and assuming into evil motives with foundation for them. Maybe the onlookers were all Black people or all aetheists. Maybe nobody was watching. Maybe Ms. Wolf is seriously mentally ill and thought voices in her head were telling her to kill Muslims. But these days it's so easy to ascribe bad intentions to people.

She tried to drown a 3 year old and only one man seems to have stopped her.

What other assumption would you like to propose?

Call out evil when you see it.

Call out cowardice when you see it.

Because if she had been wearing the hijab and tried to drown a white child, she'd be dead.

Surprised they didn’t arrest the black man. Texas sucks and has for a while. I’m in Houston.

I forgot to add that the woman's public apology will go something like this: "I apologize to Mrs. H's family for my actions. I am so sorry. This is not who I am. I have a drinking problem and I promise I will get help for that. I ask Mrs. H and her family to forgive me. I also apologize to my community and my God and ask that they forgive me."

Expand full comment

SHE may have a drinking problem, but what fueled her actions were pure unadulterated HATE. A perfect MAGA mental case.

Expand full comment

Then she will be put on probation for attempted murder of a child……that is horrible.

Expand full comment

Yes, intoxication was involved but she has more serious charges. Not sure why the bail would be low. I guess TX does as TX does.

From the AP:

“Elizabeth Wolf, 42, has been charged with attempted capital murder and injury to a child.

…. Euless police Capt. Brenda Alvarado told The Associated Press that the department has requested that prosecutors in Tarrant County treat the case as a hate crime. A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said Monday that they have received the case and are currently reviewing it.“

Expand full comment

Right. But have you seen how long it took the authorities to get to that point? They didn't move to charge her with anything more than intoxication until CAIR and a bunch of other people spoke up. Loudly.

Expand full comment

There likely was a combination of factors. If I had to guess, I’d say ultimately endangering children probably made a difference.

When police arrived they witnessed her intoxication & she attempted to leave. So the immediate charge of intoxication. EMS medically cleared the children.

The only thing I’ve seen approaching a timeline is that the incident happened May 19. The County district attorney’s office filed charges of attempted capital murder and injury to a child on May 23. I have no idea if that time lag is unusual in TX but it doesn’t seem so if they were gathering evidence. It seems that in TX the DA can file charges. The process is different than my state where the DA receives charges from the police & decides whether it will prosecute the charges, not prosecute or offer a plea. (Yes I know the TX reputation.)

As a former advocate I know in our state officers can arrest immediately if they witness a crime or there is evidence at the scene, etc. However, verbal assault and altercations without physical evidence aren’t usually taken too seriously - especially if intoxication is involved. They are usually low level misdemeanors even if there is a broken bone. Advocacy organizations aren’t always listened to either.

Capital murder etc. require more investigation. As for the hate crime referral, those are always later (and usually reluctant) aside from bias, it is because they are much more complicated and difficult to prove.

Expand full comment

Thank you for this. I've been angry enough about the incident to rush to judgement, and have a complete lack of faith in anything having to do with Texan authorities. You sound much more rational and knowledgeable than I am.

Expand full comment

Thanks for not calling me names 😊 There may be bias. There are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes. It’s certainly not a bad thing for advocates to raise their voices or question how invested the ‘justice system’ is in seeking justice.

Not knowing the TX system or the county, I can’t say if reports filed late on a Monday, should have had more charges before Friday - or if officers could have filed more charges. I do know charges for hate crimes almost always come last. It doesn’t appear to be out of the norm.

The next issue: Judges. A lot of discretion there. Yes, I’ve had probably enough training to have a degree in “DOJ approved trainings” among others.

I’m retired but I still recommend becoming familiar with ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) and resilience factors. Important for people who know someone or who have themselves experienced trauma. Trauma isn’t good for adults or children. This is one of those incidents that can traumatize not only a family but their community.

My heart goes out to the woman and her children who were so brutally attacked, and for absolutely no reason. They deserve to have a place to live where they feel safe. I cannot fathom why some people can't deal with other people being somewhat different. My life experience, traveling all over the world, has taught me that we are all alike, no matter our skin color, our culture, or our religion. There are wonderful, caring people everywhere, who are eager to help strangers in need. I hate the direction our country has taken for so long, never learning and never willing to change for the better. And acknowledge the rights that all of us should have as human beings.

Incredible how many people are still trying to figure out the multiple changes in their environment without actually changing their own views. Added to that mix are family fears and anxiety-filled teachings. We all need to learn about and from our neighbors in concentric circles. Change doesn’t always have to be scary. The woman’s illness is serious. Will she get help during her long prison sentence? Will our cities offer help via a combo of mental health services and educational programs and how do we get all of us engaged in the community together?
