Not sure I really agree with this. Strange as this will sound, I think you’re giving Trump too much credit, ie for strategic thinking. I think this would be a good explanation several years ago, but the current Trump has gone completely off the rails. I think this is much more about his personal hatred of Obama than anything else. Yes, this does have strongly racist elements, and yes his base also hates Obama, but strategically this is a dumb move, which is why the GOP leadership is upset. I think it reflects his lack of impulse control, which has been obvious for years but seems to have gotten worse recently.

Maybe but Trump goes by instinct. And he won with that in 2016 but lost in 2020. So he appears to be pivoting back to 2016 themes including repeal Obamacare. He is even calling for a Muslim ban. But at the end of the day he is a white supremacist and that drives so much of what he says

Expand full comment

Not disagreeing that he’s a racist--of course he is--just that I think he’s much more impulsive and less strategic than he used to be.

Again, I think that’s very true of the 2015-2021 version of Trump, but less so now.

I think you may be right, Becky: Trump read an op-ed in the WSJ and simply had to comment, even if that meant strategically he “stepped in his own shit”, ie by bringing up his failure to deliver on his promise of “repeal and replace” from the 2016 election.

It truly is dumber than words can describe and I think there’s every reason to believe that his cognitive decline has wrecked what little impulse control he previously had...

That’s my thought as well.

Nobody ever said "GENIUS " when referring to TRUMP, except, of course, himself, the very picture of a "STABLE GENIUS. " Of course, the GOP can't fight their way out of WET PAPER BAG these days!! LOL!!!😅😄

On tv today DJT said that if Jesus came to earth today he would vote for Trump. !!!!!

Desperation. He’s trying to incite the Evangelicals (invoking Jesus with the implied “Chosen One” motif) and the racists (Obamacare). Neither will work on enough of the independents to put him over the top.

Trump has very limited brain capacity, but one thing he does know how to do is make his base roar with delight by feeding their insatiable hate and bigotry. So he doesn’t have to think too much about anything. He does most of this by instinct. He’s also very jealous of Obama’s popularity, his high intelligence, and his tremendous speaking skills. Lacking any impulse control, he just sort of wings it and does whatever seems like the right thing to do to rile up the base. The good thing is that this rancid base of his is not large enough to really get him elected again.

I hope you’re right about his base not being large enough.

I hope so too, but I’m not just pulling this out of thin air; I’m basing it on predictions from experts who follow these things. Trump’s approval rating outside of his base is not very good at all.

Many in gqp are not happy because many a red states have finally opted for it for their constituents after denying, and denying to just oppose the ACA because it's a Democratic, black President's idea. It's the hatred of Democrats and bonus racism that wins the heart(less)s of rabid mob.

That’s true, but they’re over-empowered by the combination of where they live and the structure of the Electoral College. Without the EC Trump would never have had a chance in any general election.

I agree, and that's what worries me about these third-party candidates.

Yes indeed, and they seem to be funded by plutocrats who want Trump back in.

We can get ten million more votes and some paltry margin in a couple of swing states gets him in office... because... Democracy, right? 🤬

I’m glad to hear that you have looked into that. I’ve just been too scared to research that out of fear I would find out he has a large base. 👍

There is one thing that no one can predict right now, and that’s what happens with these third-party candidates. That could certainly have a less than desirable effect. As far as this Dean Phillips primary campaign goes, my gut feeling is that it’s going to implode in the very near future.

I think trump has always been jealous of Obama's success., it's why the smears, plus the racism too. trump has only been successful in conning his supporters with lie after lie and never paying his bills. ''Try as he may, Trump will never be in the same galaxy as President Obama when it comes to success, intelligence and class.''

More and more, tRump fits the character of Chauncey Gardner, from Peter Sellers movie, Being There. Every power player seeks to move the character into the presidency as a puppet of their wishes. The character Chauncey was the gardener, and is mistaken for someone with plain wisdom, even though his mental aptitude is limited. At the end of the movie, there is hushed dialogue to place him in the presidency. tRump fits the bill. His puppet masters are happy to see him continually stir up the public so they do not see the insatiable need for money and power. The con man, tRump, is being conned and he does not even know it.

I can't claim to know why he's suddenly focusing on the ACA but glad if it worries the GOP. His frequent claim that "his plan" would be revealed in two weeks was fodder for so much ridicule on twitter.

Obama, in Trump's bigoted head, equals black. So, anything that is connected to Obama/ "the scary black man," will be fodder for Trump and those who are as racist as he is. It's all about triggering his own minions. He doesn't have a policy proposal in that sewer that he uses for his brain, so this is just calling out to his fellow racists. *SIGH!*

Agree & align with everything about bigoted morons and DJT. It's just Trump & Palin don’t understand why their base worship them, they just replay their greatest hits for the rubes & morons based on the applause and fan mail. It doesn't take a rocket science to play to one’s ego. Trump is basic & banal. His spite motivates him second only to lust.

I think you have put your finger on an important point. At the heart of “white grievance,” at the heart of DJT’s feral instinct for his political “movement,” there is nothing deeper than rooted racist hate. What a sad, shallow, heinous way to live. Very many more Americans must reject than accept this way. Seeing it clearly is a necessary first step.
