Thanks Dean, I am recording it since it’s on so late. Will watch tonight. The whole ageism thing with the MSM (cue NYT) is driving me crazy. Betty White? Jane Fonda? At least Biden can ride a bike. Fake Bone Spurs can’t walk 1/2 block. While many of us wanted to see a new candidate on the Dem side, this is too critical. And Joe himself said he wouldn’t be running if Fake Bone Spurs wasn’t. What is frying my ass is the delays by Garland, how long it took to get Jack Smith in place and all this slow down the clock crap. Fake Bone Spurs must stand trial BEFORE the election. And SCOTUS for once needs to do the right thing, no stay, and no immunity. One can hope I guess…

It’s not just Stewart who is bringing up Biden’s age. It’s frequently “joked about” in all of the late night shows I’ve watched (Colbert, Kimmel, & though I don’t watch him anymore, that hack Bill Maher also makes ageist jabs at Biden). IMO, it’s harmful. I know these guys probably have teams of young writers, but the hosts have control over content. The situation is too dire. It’s too late for another candidate. It will be Biden. Dems put far more weight on Biden’s age than the MAGAs do on Dementia J. Trump. The ageism crap must stop now!

absolutely. And when Biden ran the first time, there were a bevy of younger, qualified alternatives. We chose Biden, knowing what age he was then, and what age he'd be in 2024. Why are people so shocked that he's 4 years older...after 4 years?

It's also ableism, to equate old age with dementia as if everyone older than the random age of 63 is mentally incapable of knowing what day it is.

None of it will happen if Biden doesn't win. And last night Stewart went on the attack against Biden's age and forgetfulness in such a way I had to wonder how he, a known influencer, thought that was helping.

Expand full comment

To be fair, he started with the story in the news was all about Biden’s age. I thought he did a great job, immediately showing the trumps all ‘forgetting’ everything. I think the rest, (chocolate cookies) was an attempt to get his campaign people aware that they’re horrible, so far, in getting out & fighting like hell!

Stewart's entire attack on Biden was mean-spirited. As for what he was telling Biden's campaign people--to me it was more like 'Can't you keep that idiot under control?' I didn't see anything friendly about what he had to say about Biden. Nothing that would indicate he wants Biden to win. In fact, he went out of his way to say neither one of them are good candidates.

I hear you. There are so many good things he could have said. He did defend Biden when his guest was on, saying since he had such a successful first term, why wouldn’t he have another? He could mention how physically fit he is, etc. I’m betting on him to do this on future Mondays, & in the meantime, I’m sure Jordan Klepper will go to town on trump all week.

I was and am a huge fan of Stewart and Colbert. If I recall Stewart was called to the Obama WH twice because of his views. He had enormous influence.

He will call Dems out if he thinks it’s warranted but the republicans give him so much more fodder.

His point last night about staying in the fight hit the mark. I never thought I’d be fighting this fight again, collecting signatures, again, to protect a women’s bodily autonomy!

To Stewart’s point, we must not ever let up.

Thank you! It seems those on our side react on a hair trigger because we are so used to media malpractice. It's not the job of a brilliant satirist like Stewart to make us feel comfortable.

As Karl Frisch, Chair of a school board and dedicated Democrat says, if you wake up the day after the election and are not exhausted from doing everything you could to help the best outcome, you haven't done enough.

I keep those words and thoughts front of my mind, and very much appreciate Dean's affirmation and amplification of the power of activism. Every. Little. Thing. helps.

Interesting to compare Stewart on The Daily Show with Colbert on the Late Show. Colbert’s monologue was a lot less both-sidesish, and presented TFG as (contrary to Stewart) the vile, vicious, INSANE threat to democracy most of us see him as.

It’ll be interesting to see what Oliver does on Sunday. 🤔😉😊

Interesting enough. Jon Stewart is executive producer of the late night w Stephen Colbert.

Ok - fine. But I was angered he didn’t come out punching fascistic Trump out with cutting words and the truth

I was so excited to see Stewart's return. Now I'm wondering why he went so negative and harsh. If he wanted to argue against Biden as our nominee, he's quite a few months too late.

Stewart faded right at the clutch. He’s got some making-up to do.

I have never been so disappointed as I was for Stewart’s ageist attacks on Biden. He both-sides Trump and Biden when there is a stark contrast between the two men. If you want a Hitleresque Dictator, then Trump’s your guy. I’ll never watch The Daily Show again. I hope it tanks. #BoycottTheDailyShow

Comedy we don't approve of should be off the air- just like Trump wanted SNL cancelled. Got it,

Ouch. That’s harsh. And I usually find you quite reasonable.

This—this needs to be said, because too many "Never-Trumpers" are going to be very angry for a long time if they expect Jon Stewart to be a flaming sword of DNC Liberalism....

Expand full comment

It was kind of predictable to read some who were so angered by Jon’s A block they ‘turned him off in disgust’. Which is to say they were not fans to begin with and merely tuned in to look for validation of their own views and probably do wherever they go. Which is awfully close to the strife and ever widening divide they missed him talking about. You’re right Dean-views have narrowed to the point people have forgotten what satire is even about! Or maybe it was that it was a simpler time in 2016.

I recall Stewart saying something to the effect that it didn't matter who we voted for in November, the country would still be the same, nothing much would change, or something like that. It sounded very flippant and careless to say that voting for Trump brings the same risks as voting for Biden. That's just wrong! So disappointing.

Hey Dean, I just saw that like me you are Bergen County boy, a Jersey lawyer, and an alum of a Hackensack law firm. I have spent most of my long life in various parts of Bergen County including Paramus, Elmwood Park (then East Paterson), Bergenfield and Ridgewood. No wonder I like you.
