There’s almost a sense of surprise by some in corporate media to numerous speakers at Donald Trump’s rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden openly peddling racism, bigotry and sexism. But at least the media for the most part are covering it accurately--for a change.
The headlines did not hold back from Politico blaring “Fallout spreads from racist rhetoric at Trump’s MSG rally” to The Associated Press headline “Trump’s Madison Square Garden event features crude and racist insults” to The Washington Post declaring, “Trump rally speakers lob racist insults, call Puerto Rico ‘island of garbage.’
This NY Times headline summed up it well, “Trump at the Garden: A Closing Carnival of Grievances, Misogyny and Racism.” And below is a screengrab of another NY Times headline from last night about the event:
Here is a sample of the hate buffet served up to the cheering MAGA crowd.
1. Anti-women:
Donald Trump again called VP Harris a "very low IQ individual."
Tucker Carlson said to cheers if Harris wins she will be “the first Samoan, Malaysian, low IQ former California prosecutor ever to be elected president.”
Grant Cardone, a businessman said VP Harris and “her pimp handlers will destroy our country,” obviously suggesting Harris is a prostitute.
-David Rem a person the campaign identified as a childhood friend of Trump, brandished a crucifix and called Vice President Kamala Harris “the antichrist” and “the devil” to huge applause.
2. Anti-Black:
-The rally played Confederate favorite “Dixie” before Black GOP Rep. Byron Donalds came out at Madison Square Garden.
-“This cool Black guy with the thing on his head, what is that a lampshade? Believe this guy? Just kidding, that’s one of my buddies. He had a Halloween party last night. We had fun, we carved watermelons together,” said podcaster and alleged comedian Tony Hinchcliffe.
3. Anti-Latino and anti-Migrant hate:
-Referring to Latino migrants, radio host Sid Rosenberg declared to cheers that they are causing crime and that: “The fucking illegals, they get whatever they want, don’t they?!”
-“I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” said Tony Hinchcliffe.
-“These Latinos, they love making babies. Let’s know that they do. They do. There’s no pulling out. They cum inside. Just like they did to our country!’ again Hinchcliffe.
4. Anti-Arab/Palestinian hate:
-Rudy Giuliani declared: "The Palestinians are taught to kill us at two-years old. There may have good people. I'm sorry I don't take a risk with people who are taught to kill Americans at two." He then declared to big cheers, “I’m on the side of Israel…Donald Trump is on the side of Israel.”
Anti-Semitism:
-“You also know the Jews having a hard time throwing out that paper, you know what I’m saying?’ Hinchcliffe stated while mimicking holding money, playing on anti-Semitic trope that Jews are cheap.
Before this MAGA event, some invoked the hate-filled February 20, 1939 Nazi rally at MSG billed as a "Pro American Rally" which featured a huge image of George Washington in between swastikas. After Sunday’s Trump rally, that comparison was no longer speculative, it was 100% accurate.
As Gov. Tim Walz stated bluntly, “There’s a direct parallel” between Trump’s rally “to a big rally that happened in the mid-1930s at Madison Square Garden.” Adding, “And don’t think that he [Trump] doesn’t know for one second exactly what they’re doing there.” And Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez rightfully called Sunday night’s event a “hate rally.”
The backlash was so pronounced that this morning Fox News went into protect the “supreme leader” mode by claiming every sexist and bigoted comment was a “joke.” They weren’t. This was not an open mike, every speaker was personally invited by the campaign to be a part of what they expected would be the campaign’s biggest closing event. And even the attempts at racist humor tell you so much about the invited speakers who likely had their material vetted in advance.
Trump spokesperson Karoline Leavitt even appeared on Fox News today trying to address the firestorm but all she did was confirm what we knew about MAGA. Fox News co-host Steve Doocy asked Leavitt about the controversy, stating, “You know, this morning, mainstream media has picked up on the comic’s comments, which were offensive, have been denounced by the campaign and everybody else. What went on with that?”
Leavitt at first responded, “Look, it was a comedian who made a joke in poor taste.” But then she instructively added, “The crowd, they didn’t mind.”
She is half right. Of course, the crowd “did not mind.” What she left out was that the crowd loved it. They cheered and laughed at the sexist and bigoted lines delivered by people handpicked by the Trump campaign. Bigotry and sexism are the fuel that power MAGA.
None of us needed this rally to understand what MAGA is about. We know it’s a hate movement. Trump’s closing message in this campaign is identical to his opening message when he slithered down the escalator at Trump Tower to launch his 2016 campaign. It’s hate, divisiveness, anger and sexism. And in eight days we will finally cancel the Donald Trump show for good!
If I could only get my family to read this. It literally breaks my heart to know that people I grew up with will be voting for that man. I have tried for years to get them to listen to the truth about him but I gave up. They all live in a state so red that their votes won't change the results but it would change how I feel about them now. If trump wins I'm sure I'll be able to say, "told ya so" soon enough but at this point it isn't even worth it. I guess at least the media is being honest but what took so damned long? After voting has been going on for weeks, how many votes could the media have turned if they'd done their jobs all along? Personally I am sick at my stomach with the fear of that man either winning or having the house steal the election. The only thing that will save us is President Harris.
I understand that Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, and Bad Bunny, all of whom are Puerto Rican, have some hundreds of millions of followers on social media and just told them to vote for Harris. Trump is going to be very sorry he opened his big fat mouth.
