On Tuesday night, we saw a profile in patriotism and courage as Rep. Ilhan Omar refused to be silenced by a MAGA terrorist who was incited by Donald Trump to attack her. Rep. Omar was holding an in person town hall in Minnesota when 55 year-old Anthony Kazmierczak—a right wing MAGA supporter who has donated to Trump in the past—approached and demanded she resign. The angry Trump lover then sprayed her with a vinegar smelling fluid from a syringe.
Omar’s response was remarkable. She didn’t cower—despite being diminutive, she charged him literally with a fist raised like she was going to punch him. From there, we heard Omar state loudly, “We will continue,” adding, “These f-----g a--holes are not going to get away with this.”
Despite her security detail urging her to end the event, Omar then addressed her constituents saying to applause, “Here’s the reality that people like this ugly man don’t understand. We are Minnesota strong and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us.” From there, Omar finished her statement calling for ICE to be abolished and Kristi Noem to be impeached followed by questions.
This was not a random attack. It was an act of domestic terrorism as defined by federal law. We know that because his attack was politically motivated per his family, who stated that he was a “right-wing extremist” who hated Omar. And a friend told the media that before the event, Kazmierczak said he was going to the Omar event, adding, “I might get arrested.” In other words, he went there on a mission like an ISIS terrorist—except in this case he is a MAGA terrorist.
Only hours before this latest MAGA terrorist attack, Trump spoke at a rally in Iowa were he demonized Omar by name—something he has been increasingly doing over the past month. He told his MAGA faithful that Omar “comes from a country that’s a disaster,” “they’re good at one thing, pirates.” He added, but they don’t have pirates anymore because we killed them, repeating “Boom! Boom! Boom!” to big cheers from the audience.
Earlier this week, Trump posted online that his DOJ would be investigating Omar for crimes. And alarmingly, just last week at Davos, Trump made a not so veiled threat, telling the audience Omar “comes from a country that’s not a country but she’s telling us how to run America.” He added ominously, she’s “not going to get away with it much longer, let me tell you.”
Then came the attack Tuesday intended to terrorize Omar by a Trump supporter. This is exactly what Trump wanted. As we’ve all seen, Trump repeatedly attacks his target until they are either threatened or attacked. And despicably after the attack, Trump claimed Omar staged it, saying, “I think she’s a fraud. I really don’t think about that. She probably had herself sprayed, knowing her.”
This incident is a stark reminder that MAGA is the greatest domestic terrorist threat our nation faces. It was MAGA that attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 and brutally assaulted police officers in the service of Trump’s attempt to stay in power despite losing the election. As the Jan 6 House committee’s final report put it: “The central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump, whom many others followed. None of the events of January 6th would have happened without him.”
From there, Trump not only praised the terrorists, he pardoned them on day one of his second term to send a message that if you commit violence in service of my agenda, I will have your back.
Since then we have seen additional acts of MAGA terror—ranging from threats to deadly violence. Last year, a Trump supporter who espoused right wing anti-abortion views stalked and then killed State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, and her husband, Mark. This MAGA terrorist also wounded a Democratic lawmaker and his wife. And this Trump loving killer-- per prosecutors-had a list of other Democratic politicians in his S.U.V that he planned to kill.
Even Republicans who dared to defy Trump are targeted by the MAGA terror machine. Last fall, then GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was trashed by Trump for daring to defy him. He even declared in writing that she was a “traitor.” As MTG told the press at the time, in response, she was then subject to “a hot bed of threats against me are being fueled and egged on by the most powerful man in the world.”
Earlier this month we all saw the horrific footage of Reene Good and Alex Pretti murdered in Minnesota. This, too, is MAGA terrorism. The people in charge of the agents who killed both are 100% MAGA. And after these two were murdered, MAGA leaders like Stephen Miller and Kristi Noem labeled both as “domestic terrorists.” That is exactly what the Iranian regime does when they slaughter their citizens protecting the oppressive government.
And just last Friday, Rep. Maxwell Frost was at Sundance film festival he was “punched in the face” by a man who told him Donald Trump was going to deport him. The man—who also yelled racist remarks at Frost—was arrested at the scene and charged with numerous felonies.
This list doesn’t even include the MAGA terrorist threats and attacks targeting judges, prosecutors and the “unprecedented” number of threats against the FBI after Trump’s Mar-a-Lago was searched 2020. In fact, after the FBI searched Trump’s home, we even saw a MAGA terrorist attack on the FBI office in Cincinnati that left the attacker dead.
There is no denying MAGA is a fascist movement given its use of violence as one of its tools to acquire and retain political power. But there is clearly a terrorist wing to MAGA as well. No domestic organization over the past few years has engaged in as much violence as MAGA on U.S. soil. And the attack on Rep. Omar is a reminder that there is no greater domestic terror threat facing our nation today than MAGA.
