I am a clinical social worker who once worked in a university program that treated pregnant, drug-abusing women, including prostitutes. What I learned then was that most of those largely poor women and girls came from supremely dysfunctional homes in which a startling number of them were not only neglected, but sexually abused by male relatives from a very early age. They might have been desperate to escape, but where would they go? Their parents were often drug abusers or alcoholics. One little girl I heard about was being prostituted by her mother's boyfriend to get money to buy drugs. The girl came to our attention when a cab driver had solicited brought her in to an emergency room to be examined for STDs. It's a scandal how little we protect children, how few institutions we have to see to their needs, how we look the other way. Which means we, too, by virtue of our indifference, are guilty of malfeasance.
It doesn't sound familiar to me, Anna. If I had a clue, I'd read it. I suppose there's enough 'blame' to go around, but it's hard to know how wide to draw that circle. Should we blame the grandparents for lacking skill, will, or opportunity enough to be good parents to the parents of these girls? The teachers who failed them? Our degenerate culture as evidenced by any number of 'offerings on the internet? Our cultural history of valuing females primarily for their beauty and sexual attractivenes? The economy that's shed so many of the jobs available to less educated people, so that they fall into criminal behavior?
