My long time friend Joy Reid never holds back on the truth. That is why she is an award-winning journalist, creator of the best-selling Substack “Welcome to Joy’s House” and host of the very popular The Joy Reid show on YouTube.
True to form, Joy made people know what the truth sounds like in our Substack Live conversation Friday. She began by making it clear that what we are seeing with Donald Trump sending troops into the street of Washington, D.C. was fascism. As she rightly noted, “If this were happening in any other country, we would report it as a fascist takeover.” But the corporate media refuses to use that word.
Joy went on to slam Trump sending troops and federal agents into the streets of Washington, D.C., where checkpoints have been set up to demand people “show their papers.” Yes, in an American city that is what is happening! And as she noted, this is one of the practices of the white government during apartheid in South Africa.
In fact, as Joy explained, after President Obama won re-election in 2012, “White South Africans from the party that was the apartheid party in South Africa reached out to American Republicans urgently with a 911 and said to them, if you all don't become, quote unquote, a white interests party” you will be in essence overrun. So much of what are seeing from Trump is fueled by that idea of being the protector of white people.
We also discussed the gerrymandering by the GOP in Texas which is also about preserving white power. As Joy explained, “Texas is already an apartheid state” given white people are a minority (39% of voters) yet with new GOP drafted map will control nearly 70% of the congressional seats. And that is by design, given the GOP drew a new map that diluted the political strength of Black and Brown voters while creating those white majority districts.
Finally, we took on the horrors of Gaza and the goals of the Netanyahu administration to remove the Palestinian Christians and Muslims from that enclave as well as the West Bank. As I noted, my Palestinian relatives in the West Bank have been there for generations, but now extreme Israeli settlers emboldened by Netanyahu and the Trump regime are trying to literally colonize my family’s land.
