As far as this veteran is concerned, the ENTIRE Republican party are loyalists to the Lyin' King. They are are in no way patriots, but ARE false patriots or JINGOS.
It is a time for action to restore the government we had that had evolved on the basis of our constitution after a war to oppose tyranny and restore and improve of the rights the (British based) citizens of the colonies felt they already had. Now we have a regime breaking written rules literally and figuratively as they view the past precedents and regulations as barriers to their wishes. They do not serve the people but only their narcissism and greed, with no thought of America as an idea of destination for freedom, but only as their birthright. But even that dystopian vision does not encompass the right to disregard the rule of law and take us back to the rule of any one man or group. Now leadership (who will be our Washington, and who our Adams and Jefferson to think for us) is needed. In this world of income inequality and media directed activity, how will activities be funded and explained to the populace? We have evolved into two political parties, but both of these factions do not seem fit for purpose. The echo chamber of resistance is thoughtful and loud. Now is the time for leadership to form. I am sure it is out there. Why is it not more visible?
So well spoken, Stuart. I had ancestors from before the war for independence and I had ancestors at the conventions in Philly. So lots of skin in the game. I keep wondering what, if they can see this mess and I pray not, what they would be thinking. I imagine they would be really disappointed in us--nay, horrified by us. I think one of the problems, among many, is that a good percentage of the current population has no skin in the game and no understanding of what is at stake. God help us to help ourselves.
Just think of how intelligent voting could have prevented all the talk of violent revolution because what is more ironic that a democracy going to war over what the voters were too ignorant to stop. Revolutions are usually the result of having no other choice like our Revolutionary War against an oppressive foreign government not a result of electoral ignorance by the electorate and I mean voters and nonvoters who made this happen. Why is it taboo on the left to question the intelligence and compassion of people who let evil win by doing nothing. Ever wonder why the right is ALWAYS the beneficiaries of liberal fuck ups? Maybe they influence us because we are not that smart or that compassionate either. Nonvoters would rather let minorities suffer so they can feel self righteous and dream about some fantasy future where voting will never need to be done anymore.
An excellent piece, one all Americans should read, especially on the Eve of your 250th birthday. Then definitely ask themselves how far will they go to save their country?
Trump is actually WORSE than George III, in both his personal and political ethics. The GOP-packed SCOTUS has given him more power and more immunity than the British monarch had in 1776, little over a century after Parliament asserted its power and put kings on notice by expelling one (James II, in 1688) and beheading another (Charles I, James's father, in 1649).
It's true that the last great Republican president was Dwight Eisenhower. He did a tremendous amount for this country, both militarily and as a leader of the free world. All who followed in his party have, quite frankly, been disappointments in one way or another.
Heather Cox Richards discussed the Declaration of Independence in her podcast yesterday. The reasons the framers gave for separating from England are very familiar! They could have been describing trump and his goons and outlining all the reasons there are for them all to be impeached! Why are we waiting?
I'm really amazed that the original safe guards the founders put in place to guard us from tyrants, today is NOT enough !!! If we get get out of this Trump /MAGA mess, there has to be MAJOR overhaul to create stronger safe-guards with TEETH.
