Obama just gave Dems Perfect closing message

This is a winning message!
On Saturday, former President Barack Obama took to the road to help Democratic candidates running for office in the key battleground states of Michigan and Wisconsin. There, Obama served up the perfect closing question for voters: “Who will fight for your freedom?” And the answer clearly is the Democratic Party—as the former President laid out on issues from reproductive freedom to the freedom to marry.
With only a week to Election Day and polls tightening in key races, Democratic leaders and strategists are searching for the most effective closing message that will inspire voters to cast a ballot for Democratic candidates. Some have argued for a message focused on the economy while the always blunt Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson made an impassioned plea on my SiriusXM show Thursday that Democrats should forget all that and instead “scare the sh*t out of voters about what Republicans are going to do because what they are going to do is scary as sh*t.”
Both messages will certainly resonate with some. But the one that moves so many Democrats—as I’ve repeatedly heard from listeners to my show—is the message that former President Obama delivered Saturday as well as Friday in Georgia: Fighting to save our freedoms from the GOP’s extremism.
This same message was the theme of California Governor Gavin Newsom headline grabbing ad released on July 4th in which he slammed Republicans and especially Florida’s GOP Governor Ron DeSantis on this very issue. In that ad, Newsom told voters, “Freedom is under attack in your state.” The California governor then added, that as Democrats, “we still believe in freedom: Freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate, and the freedom to love.” Newsom closed his appeal with the words, “Don’t let them take your freedom.”
When that first aired, there was a tsunami of praise from Democrats online and from listeners to my show. Just last week, I replayed that ad on my show and again listeners responded with how powerful they thought it was and urged Democrats to embrace it. Then came Obama’s speech Saturday doing just that. (I’m not suggesting a correlation between the two!)
The former President implored the crowd at his first stop in Michigan: “Who will fight for your freedom? Is it a bunch of Republican politicians and judges who think they should get to decide when you start a family or how many children you have, who you marry or who you love?” He then added, “Or is it leaders like [Michigan’s Democratic governor] Gretchen Whitmer who believe that the freedom to make these personal decisions belong to every American, not politicians in Washington?"
A short time later at a rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while flanked by Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Democratic US senate candidate Mandela Barnes, Obama again posed the question of freedom to the crowd. “Is it Republican politicians and judges who think they should get to decide when you start a family or how many children you should have, or who you marry or who you love?” Obama continued, “Or is it Democratic leaders who believe that the freedom to make these most intimate personal decisions belong to every American, not politicians, mostly men, sitting somewhere in Washington?” The 44th president then put it pointedly: “That’s the choice in this election; that’s what you have to decide.”
Obama in these speeches did also address the issue of inflation/economy—which many polls show is a top concern. After acknowledging the pain caused by the rising prices, he then noted, “Who’s going to do something about it? Republicans are having a field day running ads talking about it, but what is their actual solution to it?”
Obama tackling the issue the way he did he is the best Democrats can do. Inflation is a global issue –not a uniquely American one-that has no easy solution because if it did, leaders of each country would’ve reduced it.
The reality is that this is a midterm election, not a presidential election. That means voter turnout is traditionally considerably lower, thus, the top priority is inspiring your own political base to vote. For example, in 2014, only 37% of eligible voters cast a ballot. On the high end was 2018 record turnout for a midterm, but that was still only about one in two voters with a turnout of 53 percent. Compare that to the 66 percent voter turnout in 2020 presidential election year.
And while recent polls find voter interest in this election is on the higher end for a midterm, winning this election for Democrats is first about energizing their base to cast a ballot. That is why the closing message must move Democrats. Saying inflation causes “pain” but no one has a solution doesn’t get anyone to the polls. But Democrats double and tripling down on the GOP is coming for your freedoms does move people—because it’s true.
If Democratic candidate are in search of a closing message that will invigorate Democratic voters in the final week of campaigning, the hope is they follow the lead of the two-time elected President, Barack Obama. Make it clear to voters that while one party wants to take your freedoms, it’s the Democrats who will fight for them.
After all, inflation is temporary, losing your freedom may be permanent.
